Mr. Clauss is both a litigator and a business lawyer. He has been involved in the insurance defense business for more than twenty years handling a wide variety of claims including products liability, medical malpractice, general liability, advertising injury, trademark and patent infringement and maritime claims, as well as insurance coverage disputes. He has resolved many cases through direct settlement discussions and mediation, and has tried many cases to verdict in the various counties of New York and in the Federal Courts of New York and Connecticut.
Mr. Clauss has represented the insureds of The Travelers, AIG, Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company and Winterthur Insurance Company, among others. He has lectured on professional liability and risk management issues for professional organizations and insurance companies in the United States and in China.
As a business lawyer Mr. Clauss has represented both emerging and well established public and private companies in such fields as aviation, pharmaceuticals, textile manufacturing, shipping and transportation. He served as President of the U.S.-China Chamber of Commerce from 1995 through 1998, and led several trade missions to China to help US companies succeed in their trade and investment activities with Chinese companies.
Mr. Clauss began his legal career as a Special Assistant United States Attorney on the Organized Crime Strike Force in the Southern District of New York. He then worked for several recognized firms as a business lawyer and insurance defense litigator, including running his own firm for ten years, before joining Gallo Vitucci & Klar as Of Counsel in 2008.
Mr. Clauss was admitted to the bar in New York in 1978 and in Connecticut in 1985. He is admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the District of Connecticut, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Court of International Trade.
